Incense is more popular now than ever. Incense used to be something for hippies or druggies or anyone but you. When you thought of incense you thought of beaded curtains and folks with dark glasses. But now, incense is more popular than ever and it is right out in the open where it belongs. Burning incense is a type of aroma therapy. There are more types and scents of incense than you could possible hope to try in your lifetime. While it is much cheaper and easier to buy your own incense, you can make it and when you make your own you can specialize the scents that will be used.
The main ingredients for incense include, a powdered wood, like sandalwood, a glue like gum Arabic, saltpeter for ignition, a liquid and a scent. Once you have rounded up these obscure ingredients, you can choose some essential oils or powdered herbs, frankincense, etc. for your scent.
To begin, take six parts of whatever your wood base will be, add some drops of essential oils and any powdered incense scents you may want to add, add saltpeter very carefully, no more than ten percent of the total measurement of the other ingredients including whatever liquid you use. Next, spoon in your glue a little bit at a time, no more than a teaspoon at a time, until it becomes the desired consistency for rolling into cone shapes. You will want to let your incense dry for a week to ensure that it holds together why you burn it. You can make sticks by thinning out your incense mixture and dipping bamboo sticks into the mixture and re-dipping until it becomes the desired size.
It’s still easier to just buy your own incense, but at least you now know how its made and who knows, perhaps you’ll decide to make your own!
